Linux operating system for the pooter. Trouble is I have no resident geek to do the stuff so we are on our own. So far I have managed to start a Linux operating system from a cd - and it works! Hey and fast too. Very fast. I think we may get an old laptop and try out the linux properly for a while. Any thoughts from any geekers out there?
This all came about as our local microwave broadish band system is going off line in the village [storm damage to a building that houses a mast for the locality] and BT have finally decided to knit the fibre stuff properly up this way so we are soon to have superfast bits with a steam pooter - hence the possible changes.

I'd start with either Linux Mint or OpenSUSE (go with the LEAP version). You can run either from a Live CD or USB stick to see which one you prefer. Both are nice and stable, with good user communities.
If your hardware supports it, go with the 64 bit version.
For image editing, you can look at LightZone, Darktable, Gimp - all are free, open source.
I feel I should be able to say something about Linux, that sort of thing being what I did for a living not so long ago. Your strategy is good - try it on a second machine for a while and see how it goes. If you can do everything you want to do with it then no reason not to use it. Do let us know how you get on.
And congratulations on getting fibre. We are so far from our local BT cabinet we get measly speeds. A whopping 0.74Mb/s this morning!
I was very close to doing the same thing like ten years ago, or something like that. I got totally fed up with Windows and computers, even though I had no particular reason for it other than the thing constantly crashed or did a million things I didn't want it to.
Anyway, for some reason I got tricked into buying things with a big apple on the front instead, and it has been treating me quite well for many a year. It's good enough for me, and my use, anyway.
They are to bloody expensive, though, so next time I might try to go down the Linux route on some computer. Let us know as you go along, please. And good luck!
